Passive income. That’s the dream for many people, right? Make money while you sleep. Your blog or social media channel is perfect for it! I will show you how I made my first 1000$.

For 99% of Bloggers and Influencers, affiliate marketing is how they get started.

The idea behind it is that you promote other brand products, often through different affiliate networks, earning a commission if people actually end up buying thanks to your recommendation.

1. What is affiliate network?

It is based on revenue sharing. If a brand like Etsy, Booking.com, HP, Reebok, SiXT, Microsoft, Philips, and so on has a product and wants to sell it, it can offer promoters (usually bloggers and influencers) some revenue for promoting and selling the product. If you are a blogger and usually do not have your own product to sell but want to make money, then you can promote a product from some brand that you feel has value and earn an income (commission).

The nice part of it is that your blog post with the promotion will stay online for a long time and continue to generate commission for you. Few years ago when I was still a “Travel Blogger” (I think it was in 2018) I created this article about hotels in Mauritius. You can see that I link to different sites like Booking and Hotels.com in that article (because I am an affiliate with them).

This article is still ranking on Google and I continue getting traffic to my website. People read the article, click on links and some make a reservation. And I get a commission from it. I wrote this article many years ago and still getting the payouts and put maybe 1 hour/year just to update it and change some info:

You just need to join some Affiliate network and connect with brand you like. Some even have their own affiliate network called “partner programs” and usually offer better commission and more material for promotion.

Affiliate network is a place where brands and bloggers/influencers connect with each other.

You will find there over 6,000 brands (they are usually called advertisers) such as Etsy, Booking.com, HP, Reebok, SiXT, Microsoft, Philips and so on. And over 100,000 bloggers and influencers (they are usually called publishers).

2. How does affiliate marketing work?

Basically, as a publisher, you promote brands, products or services that are relevant to your audience. You can be a Fashion blogger and promote cloth, travel blogger and promote hotels, sport influencer and promote sport products and so on.

There is ALWAYS a place for any kind of blogger or influencer! And you don’t need thousands of followers to start… It is ok with only few hundred followers on social channel or a simple blog with 2-3 posts (if you are a blogger).

The link or banner that you post includes a small piece of code that allows affiliate network system to track and payout accordingly. Every publisher gets access to an easy-to-use interface where they can find links and banners to post in their blogs and social channels.

3. How hard is it to get started?

It’s pretty easy. Affiliate marketing just means getting a link from the affiliate network system that includes the tracking information needed to credit the sale. You can easily access all these links and banners as soon as you are connected to some brand.

How much money can someone make using affiliate marketing?

You can earn indefinitely with just a single link which is why affiliate marketing can be a great way to generate passive income quite easily. Affiliate links generally don’t expire as long as you are still active in that Advertiser’s program.

So, if a customer finds your blog post from a trip you took two years ago, and it inspires them to click through and make a purchase or book a trip, you will still earn a commission. Just like it was with my article about hotels in Mauritius.
